The time servers are like a computer server in another sense, they are usually located on a network. A time server information is collected on time, usually from an external source of material and then synchronized to the network at that time.

Often time servers are synchronized to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) time of origin is the global standard and allows all computers in the world to synchronize exactly the same time. This is of obvious importance in industries where the right time is crucial as the exchange or the airline industry.

For there are several sources that a time server can be used as reference date. The Internet is an obvious source, however, references to Internet Calendar of the Internet as windows.time nist.gov and can not be authenticated, allowing the server time and it both the network vulnerable to security threats.

Alternatives are authenticated Internet, the most commonly used GPS network. As the Global Positioning System is based on knowing exactly what time it is to ensure reliable location information, this information may be used by a time server.

A single antenna GPS time server connected to enable the GPS time reference should be regularly monitored by the time server. A GPS time server is accurate of a few hundred nanoseconds (a nanosecond = one billionth of a second).

There are a series of national radio programs such as WWVB signal in Colorado in the United States, the MSF signal from Cumbria in the UK and the DCF-77 from Frankfurt, Germany.

These radio signals are limited in their scope and even in big cities like London can be difficult to get a signal of sufficient housing.

Most servers use the synchronization NTP (Network Time Protocol), there are other protocols available, but is mainly used NTP and is considered the standard protocols for the calendar. NTP has existed for more 25 years and currently is version 4, but is always current, which is probably why he is fat, the most common protocol of time.

NTP time servers for work on the TCP / IP and are based on UDP (User Datagram Protocol). A less complex form of NTP – Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) is used in some devices and applications where precision is not so important and good time is also included as standard in Windows software (although the latest versions Microsoft Windows NTP have been installed and the full source code is free and easily accessible on the Internet ntp.org).
